Will a Trimac breed with a Midas? +Sex my midas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yes it would help grow the triac out before try it for sure you will just get a flowerhorn mabye a lower grade one depending on the trimac from petsmart which like said before is most likely a flowerhorn allready but the defenitly can breed

the thing about the guppys is some fish don't seem to care about them and gldfish right now my jag won't eat goldfish and will leave them alone but they will react very deferently twords anouther cichlid which is a threat to there territory they could hit it off right away and be fine but most likly they won't have enough space in a 60 gallon but people have breed flowerhorns in 60 gallons quiet a few times so it could work but they will out grow that tank feep in mind if the flowerhorn or trimac is a male it will get 14'' so it will out grow that tank so you will have the best chance with a female flower horn but if your midas is a male then that would be your only choice of course

I'm not going to try it unless somebody can actually sex my fish right.. Is it a male or female!?

also.. How should I sex a 4" Trimac?

It looks male to me, and my opinion is you need a bigger tank for that guy alone let alone trying to add another and get them to spawn. Not trying to be rude but, thats a bully of a fish you have and a trimac/flowerhorn is pretty beefy too. The waste from two monsters would be an incredible load on your filters.

If your dead set on doing it, I wouldn't expect much from a 4 inch fish with an old man. For that close of quarters, they should have grown up together. I'm sensing a fight breaking out. Always remember, a lfs can refuse payment on a torn up fish if they don't think they can sell it.

I got the Trimac anyways.. Its from petsmart and if I were going to have to return it to a pet store I wouldn't be expecting any money for him. He only cost me $8 to begin with. Hasn't been any fighting so far (3 days) but who knows.

I currently have the biggest sponge filter I could find and a emperor 400 filtering my 60g which these fish live in and the tank looks fine. Here is a picture of my setup.

I bred a male trimac (jumbo) 14" and a female midas 8" for about a year with no divider. The spawning was brutal. I don't know if the female trimac can handle the male midas. I would use a divider just in case the midas gets to physical.

do you any pictures of how their fry turned out?

Unless the two have been raised together since day one at 3 inch or less, there is no way in hell those two brutes would breed without killing each other first...The only way would be to seperate the two with the bottom of a plastic egg carton or clear piece of plastic/glass...This way, the two would see each other and grow "fond" of each other....As time progresses, the two will know each other's "scent" and movement.....I' have done this with a 11 inch Midas and 8 inch female Midas, with successful results...Of course, the male killed off the female after the 4th spawn....(but it worked):headbang2

I think the chances of those 2 breeding is slim ( especially in a tank that size). But hey, if u really want to breed them its worth a try. If u can successfully breed them thats awesome or if ur midas kill the trimac or if they just never breed. oh well. not a huge loss. thats just the way i see it.;)

You come here for advice and when everyone tells you not to do something, that it will likely end in disaster you end up doing it anyway?
The 60g it barely large enough for the Midas but that was already covered. The trimac is small enough to be a snack, that was already covered as well. Even if the trimac does survive to breeding age (because I know it isen't sexually mature yet) it still might not be the opposite sex of the Midas and regardless of sex it still might not want to breed with it. Once it hits sexual maturity it may also decide to go after your Midas. If the two do end up breeding then you're faced with hundreds of fry and no growout tank, just an already overstocked 60g. Looking at your sig you need to invest in larger tanks for your current fish, not fantasy breeding projects. Your JD will need 40-55g. The butti will need 75g. Your 30g, with the kenyii, Jewel and convict will probably end up having aggresion issues. I think you need to figure out what your priorities are.
