Will adding extra filteration compensate for overstocking an aquarium?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It can but it doesnt help the fish too much

Many people get paranoid when overstocking or thinking they may over stock. They automatically get another filter when their original one is more that sufficient. On top of that they forget about the aquarium and its ability to process toxins just fine without the filter. You just need good circulation and when I say that, I don't mean watching your fish swim aggressively against the current, as long as there is some current, your fine.

The only thing I see good with two filters is the fact that you have backup filtration and/or circulation in case one becomes faulty in some way. If your not buying another filter for that reason, scrap the original filter and get a bigger one. :headbang2

:iagree:

Heavily stocking a tank can be handled with additional cleanings, spot cleaning of waste collection areas.
Good circulation will move waste to an area that is easily cleaned.
Moving waste to a container and circulating water through it for prolonged time periods makes no sense.
Additional water changes would probably be needed also.

I would definetly hope so, this is how I always lived by.

I agree with most of what's been said, but Vlad's point about nitrates is especially important, and the only realistic way to handle nitrates is with water changes.

ALSO, an overstocked tank can have perfect water and still be terrible for the fish. The stress of overstocking can cause more harm than bad water. Stress weakens the immune system, and ultimately kills fish (not to speak of just the general poor quality of life).
