I think the basic's have been covered , I agree most important factor is the quality of the diet,
Just to add to what's been said, In my experience fish in general that are fed appropriately/sparingly do grow out to be healthier and nicer colored adults then power fed individuals.
I'm sure health plays a big part in this observation, but also if you have a 16" fish that was fed more sparingly it is much older and ore mature thus showing better color at the same size as the younger power fed fish.
Not saying daily feeding means your power feeding, but perhaps this played into what the seller was talking about.
