I rescued two Lemon Tetras (the last two) from a very gnarly looking tank at a LFS the other day. I planned to go to another one of the chain stores, only to see that they no longer had any in stock, so now I'm faced with a dilemma, I have two fish and no schooling partners.

So this is where my question comes in! Are there any readily available fish I could get that would school with the Lemon Tetras? I though perhaps black phantom tetras or red eye tetras may do the job, but I've always figured fish only school with the same species. I just want these guys to be happy :(

Cross species schoaling doesn't really happen much.... though, I used to have a mono sabae that always stayed next to his best friend shubunkin

id try out some other small similar sized tetras

One of my ponds (1300G) has a bunch of fish that all school together. Its really weird. Two 14" Koi, a 9" Albino Channel Cat, a large female Mozambique Tilapia (:screwy:), a bunch of Goldfish, and a Bunch of Rosy Reds and Fatheads (which actually shoal amongst themselves instead of just sticking together).

Then there are the 7 Mosquitofish that are the outcasts. They school together. But instead of schooling 3' down from the surface with the big "school", they are 1-2" down :D

Try serpa tetras. I've kept these w/ lemons at work in the past and they would school with eachother if the schools got widdled down enough.

Ive had red eye tetras school with black neons.

I'd have to say it depends....sometimes you will get some really odd fish schooling together, other times even similar species won't school. The only way to know for sure is to try it!
