Will Dow 795 work to reseal a glass tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Look at its application list... which is the most varied you'll probably find for a sealant...(holding tanks, ship hulls, sewer pipe repair, habitat floors, industrial floors, roofing... it goes on and on)

They have a primer so that the base product will bond straight to the glass or acrylic window. It makes a build as easy as it can get. And since there is no silicon, any future repairs are a snap since there is no silicon that you have to completely strip out... just focus on the area of the leak.

Yeah I did read the list of things it is used for and it seems like some really good stuff but I was just wondering how you would use it on a fish tank, do you just paint it on or something? I see they have a video of it and they had like a real thick paste they used to seal all the way around the floor, it was like a squeeze tube they was using for it!!

Most tank manufacturers use RTV 103, you can get it through Grainger. I have been told several people have used Dow 795 in the past with success, though it does not have quite the same strength as RTV 103.

I thought all the RTV silicones was for automotive use, would that be safe for fish??? Also do they make it in black?

It is possible there is an RTV for automotive use, however going through Grainger any of the RTV series will be fine. 103 is black, 108 is the standard clear. There are also some other colors including red if you want to get a bit crazy lol. But those are the strongest silicones you can get and what the big builders all use. Little more pricey, around $13 a tube, but worth it imo

Hum.. Maybe I will have to check into that...$13 is not bad I just paid $17 a tube for the 795, and 3M 5200 is like $22 to $25 per tube on ebay... I have always just used GE 1 to seal tanks but these tanks have black silicone on them so I want to use black again, As much as I know you hate it I am not rebuilding the whole thing so I don't want to see the black between the glass and clear in the corners...

Makes no sense to me because with GE ll you can get it in clear, black, brown, white and gray but they only make GE1 in clear and white!!
Hey could I get you to go on ebay and look this # up to see if this is what you are talking about? 221575543811 I found this for $7.77 a tube on there... just put that # in the search box and click the search button and it will bring it up..

Thanks for the input buddy and it's nice to talk to you when we don't want to kill each other over how to reseal a tank!!! LOL...

Yeah, the main product (Permiflex) goes on like thick paint.. (rollable, sprayable), but they also have a liquid rubber product that can either be poured on, spread, or thickened to use for shaping and gap filling.

That is the same stuff on ebay, not a bad price for it. Here is the link for Grainger for your reference, it has some good information about it-

As for the wanting to kill each other, I figure we may not disagree on that aspect of aquariums, but I think we can both respect each others knowledge and both want to see people succeed. We both have a lot to add, no point in trying to avoid each other :grinno:

edit- The forum is making me look bad, I cant get that link to be a link, but if you copy and paste it'll take you there.

Edit 2- About the RTV 103, looking over the info listed on ebay about it, some of that is a bit off, at least for aquarium use. Depending on temp and humidity you have about 5 minutes before it skins over rather than 10. Also it lists full cure time as 24 hours, I would give it about a week before putting water on it. If you were redoing the entire tank I'd give it two weeks to be safe.

I completely agree.. I don't hold no hard feelings at all, I know we are just 2 hard headed guys trying to get our point across...LOL..

I think I am going to give this stuff a try, I did some more research on it and found some pretty good reviews on it and no bad ones so I think it is worth a try to see how I like it.. The only thing that scares me about it is how fast it skins over, I like to do the tape outline just to make it look better and original but that can be a real pain in the butt if the silicone skins over before you get the tape off!!!

As for the cure time I don't care what kind of silicone I'm using I always give it a full 30 days to cure before I even do a test fill... GE 1 also says it cures in 24 hours but I still give it 30 days so I know it is fully cured!!!

OK sir thank you again for the help and I will let everyone know how things work out with it..

Has anyone here ever used dow 795 for anything? I already ordered a few tubes of it so wanted to try it since I already had it, I put it on the tank like 10 days ago and this stuff is still soft and gummy to the touch..

I have never used it before so I don't know if it should still be like this or not, I know they say it takes 21 days to cure but I wouldn't think it would still be gummy like this!!! I ordered it off ebay and I think it was expired because it looks like they tried rubbing the date off the tube and you can not see what it says, I'm wondering if that is the problem with it!!! Can anyone help with this question?? thanks everyone..
