In order to save your fish from harm, do as many water changes as needed to keep the ammonia below .25 ppm. Since you still will have ammonia present it will not slow your cycling process.

Ok, sounds good. I did another change this morning and now it's registering just below the .5 mark. I'll keep up with the water changes and make sure everything is staying on mark.

Can't help you but what part of Va are you from?

do more water changes and add more charcoal always keep a little sponge filter in a tank so when it comes time to seed a tank

Ammonium -> Ammonia reactions start taking place at a pretty low pH. At 7.0 it drops from an acceptable level starting at about .73ppm->.17ppm at 8.5.

if it isn't fully cycled, then your next problem will be nitrites. Prime will fix both, and IMO it doesn't make the tank take longer to cycle. Just does daily with prime until your cycle is finished.

Yeah, the nitrites are just starting to kick in and I already have a bottle of prime ready, my fish seem to be doing fine so far so I think all it going well
