I have been pondering the idea of changing my substrate. I saw a tank with a blue rock substrate and have been tempted to change mine to that color. If I do so how bad will it screw up my tank? Will I lose too much good bacteria and start a new cycle? I plan on keeping all of the same decor just change the substrate.

I have natural know. I do like it but man the look of the blue was awesome.

Give it a try. Sometimes that painted gravel starts to chip away over time however. I dont think you will restart your cycle as long as your Filter is established.

good luck

I've always changed on side and waited 2 weeks to do the other and never had a problem

Best answer is maybe.
You really won`t know till the deed is done.
Many would be surprised at the amount of BB that exists outside of their filter media.
Good news is even if you had a substantial bacterial colony on your gravel, there is also enough on all the other surfaces to start the new colonies pretty quickly.
Go ahead and put whatever you want in your tank, just be ready for some WC action if your testing shows a need.

As long as your tank is mature you won't go into a full blow cycle but you may go into a little mini cycle.

I did the same thing I was a bit worried about it so I put it in a bucket of water with a heater and a big hand full of food.

My thought was to keep the bio in it alive for the few days it would take me to see if it was going to restart the cycle. In the end that was a waste of my time.

In the end you can always does with prime each day for the few days it takes to reestablish.
