Will I kill my filter?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I put the bag in a bucket. Cut the top corners off the bag and put a hose in 1 side and just let it flow for 30 minutes.

I fill the bucket halfway, place it under the spiggot outside and let it run until the water is clear. I mix it up a few times with my hands while the water is running.

Anybody know if the bacteria in my filter media will be ok in a bucket with an airstone?

I've left my fx5 full of bio off for 36 hours. No cycle. Perfect params. Not suggesting this but a few hours off is fine, or put your bio in zip lock container with tank water and seal.

I do both methods of cleaning new sand for about 45 min each.

cover your intake with a sock for a few days. Have it turned off while you add the sand, wait 30 min put sock on turn on filter. good to go.

Here's the trick, when adding sand to a full tank, take a glass and get 1 scoop at a time, hold the glass upright all the way to the bottom of tank, then dump sand as close as you can get to bottom.

Or do a huge wc, add the sand.

If newly setting up, dump in sand, pat it down the way you want, put a glass upright on top of the sand bed, stick the hose inside the cup so it doesn't blast sand everywhere, fill up!

As stated above wash sand till it runs clear and turn off filters for an hour!

Good info. I use this method all the time and it works great.

Bag up your media like you would a fish, with enough water to keep everything wet. long as you keep your media damp should be fine in a bucket for a few days. or if you have other stocked tanks.. just toss it in one of them ( this being my personal choice)

+1 This is exactly what I do. A little time consuming, but works great!

When I did exactly as you say on my 10g I just left it in the filter for 8 days and plugged it back in. Works like a charm.

Sweet!

I just switched over from gravel to sand last weekend and love it! When I bought my tank the guy had the confetti rainbow colored gravel and it looked hideous. I was going to switch over to black gravel, however that would have cost around 4 times the price of all the sand I needed to fill my 125G, which was not quite two 50lb bags.

I used pool filter sand from menards. I left my Aquaclears in the tank, just unplugged them and took off both intake tubes while I filled the tank with sand.

The process I did was fill a 5G bucket about 1/4 full of the pool filter sand (you could do more, just liked rinsing small amounts at one time to ensure it was really rinsed and ran clear) and run a hose over it while I stirred it around real good, and then dumped the water out and repeated the process 3-4 times until I was certain the water was running clear. I liked filling the bucket only a quarter full as It was easier to stir around the sand and ensure it ran clear. Then once I had the sand cleared out I took a cup, which so happened to be a 32 ounce plastic mcdonalds cup I had sitting around that I rinsed out. Filled the cup with sand and let it overflow with water and sink it to the bottom and you could dump the sand directly to the bottom of the tank like another guy mentioned. It worked great, and the pool filter sand settles very quickly. I definitely didn't have to wait days to turn my filters back on, I had them on within an hour or less once I had all the sand in my tank. The water was a buit murky due to the fact when I took the gravel out all the crud dirtied up the water clarity, so the particles were floating around in the water column, but the water was pretty much completely cleared up the very next morning. I think it looked fantastic! You will love sand in your tank. Good luck!

F1 has covered your sand concern a lot. Follow him by simply letting water run through the sand in a bucket for a few minutes even up to an hour. While doing this turn the sand around so that all the smaller particles float and are then carried away by running water.
