I was wondering because I am thinking of putting my fish with loaches in a tank with no substrate. :nilly:

It will be fine.

It is very rare to see a jardini with drop eye.

What you could do is put something on the outside of the base of the tank. There was a thread on here arguing whether fish could see their reflections in bare bottom tanks.

Some hobbyists believe they can while others are not so sure. I just took the safe option on my asian aro tank and stuck black cardboard onto the base of the tank :)

Thank you for your prompt reply. That answered my question completely.:)

Stick your head in your tank wearing a diving mask if you still think you can see a reflection in the bottom... ;)

I doubt highly if tankmates or bare-bottom tanks cause drop eye. Have you ever seen a bottom-dweller with up-eye? And why would it often only affect one side of the fish?

I thought only silvers could get drop eye. Never seen drop eye on any aros except silvers.

This issue has been in debate for YEARS. Honestly, I think it is pure genetic more than anything else. Ive seen asian arowanas getting drop eye with and without substrate. IMO, its all about the genes.

i totally agree. its gotta be the genetics, and overall care can add in to. IMO. highly fatty foods, make more drop eye. but, as silvers age, it happens. no matter what.

never seen a Jar with DE

IME drop eye was caused by head trauma.
