WILL MY CUBAN GAR DIE

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i hope it won't but im not sure. hope the best for you and your gar sir.

I suspect he'll regurgitate it. Alligator gar do it all the time, and I don't know why the Cuban would be that much different. From bpsaquarist, on FishGeeks forum:

http://www.aquaria.info/index.php?n...pic&t=71532&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=20

"I've also observed another interesting factoid. Our gar are regurgitating spinal columns, and occasionally heads and spines of fish intact after digesting them. Some birds do the same thing, but i never actually observed a gar doing it. pretty neat."

And the response by Rkik:

"Just sent you an E-mail but forgot to mention the Coughing up of heads and spinal bones. This is known to occur with the larger gars when fed on larger prey items. Smaller item digest for them just fine but the larger fare it seems they just can't quite break down so they cough it up to get it out of their stomach. It is a bit shocking the first time you see it as it is very unexpected. Rest assured though it is not to uncommon to witness. Bad part of this from a hobbyist perspective in smaller systems is it can case big water quality problems that can affect the fishes health. Frequently the items will not be fully digested before being expelled."

Hope that helps your feelings! Cheers,

PagoJoe

55cm.... LOL who uses centimeters, that's madness.

Anyways, he should be fine. Happened to my Gator Gar about 6-8 months ago. It will pass and he'll be fine.

These fish didn't survive hundreds of millions of years choking on stones.

The rest of the world... Probably not much you can do just make sure he doesn't suffer to much if there are problems.

Yes one day it will die.....

Not sure if the stone will cause this or not but good luck with that part and maybe try feeding it some larger prey so that it might regurgitate the spines and skulls....

Keep a watch for normal excretion and bloating that might result from a blockage...

Not sure it would work with a fish but I had a Ball Python that had some solidification of it's uric discharge and the vet gave it a ky enema and massaged out the mass....

thanks guys, pagojoe is right, they will likely regurgitate it. got some pm's from rkik and phil, it seems i have nothing to worry about. so there you go guys, lesson learnt:)

thread closed on my part..:)

i would suggest over feeding him until he pukes it back up! some peole do this with catfish, although im not so sure how ittl work with a gar. its worth a try! just keep feeding him and feeding him until he gets sick and pukes! hopefully the stone will come out with the rest!

didn't see this post!:WHOA:

okay first off, not to bass you fishy fingaz, i know you were trying to help:)

but this is a bad idea. the reason that the gars do actually die during this process is as mentioned before, the severe damage wrecked upon the water due to the regurgitated food. so what you suggested was in reality, counter productive and possibly fatal.

My Koliba accidentally ate a small gravel before when I introduce some feeders midas in the tank. The gravel got in the net while I was catching some midas.

In about 4 days she started to loose slime and looks really sick. I separated the Koliba in a different tank with no substrates and raised the temp to 90-91F without feeding her. It took her about two weeks to poop it out. About 3 days later she showed a sign of recovering.

Feeding it will only cause internal damage as the guts get loaded of foods and the gravel will scratch the intestine causing some bacterial infection and will lead to the fish death. I have many cases of this with my bichirs and this is how I cure it, by raising the temp to 90-91F and not feeding it.

It happened accidentally when my Polli ate a gravel. Supposed to raised the temp to 84F, but the tank was small and it went to 90F. Found out later on the some peaces of gravel are on the bottom when there were no substrates in that tank. Same thing happened to my 2 endlis. The 4th that it happened was the Koilba and I knew what to do and did the same thing. Same thung happened, the gravel was out. Not sure if it regergetated or poop it out as I just saw the gravel on the bottom.

hope it all works out!
