My gar only eats live feeder guppies. It's been a week and it's not eaten anything. Not any of the worms or pellets I've thrown in the tank. It's always resting at the bottom of the tank. Swims around once in a pink moon and goes back to the bottom.

I refuse to feed live guppies anymore. They've cause an outbreak of fish lice in my tank twice already.

put up a tank to quarentine the guppies
how big is the gar?

if he is big enough ( 10" plus at least, in my opinion. judgeing by the fact ur still giving him guppies hes too small to do this) than he can be trained to take preparred foods. Other wise you will have to set up a quarentine tank treat the guppies, make sure they dont have lice, and feed them to the gar

He is 10". So when do I start training him to accept other food?

by he hasn't eaten anything does that mean there are no feeders in the tank? also, you should train him now.

however, i'm guessing there's an issue with your water. so he probably won't eat eitherways. can you get a reading on ammonia and nitrite tests?

he says he wont give him feeders because theyve caused fish lice in his tank

do a water change siphon the crud out of the bottom of the tank

For what:screwy::nilly:
He asked how to get his fish to except prepared food instead of guppies due to the guppies apparently giving his fish, fish lice
Not how to give him better water conditions though it always helps the fish some
*note* wasnt trying to be mean, just stating a fact

*note* again not trying to be mean or disrespectful
also that wasnt directed at u xander

Try freeze-dried krill. it worked great with my Florida gars. I just didn't provide any other types of food and within days they loved it. Since then they'll eat anything. I mean ANYTHING. Jumbo cichlids sticks, biogold, cooked shrimp that sinks to the bottom, even massivore and algaewafers. My gars are hogs and won't turn anything down.
