Will my gar die?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm trying to train them on other food. It does not have a problem eating as long as they're feeder fish. The water condition is fine. Just wondering now whether it's normal for them to rest at the bottom of the tank so often. Thanks for the replys so far.

Its is not uncommen at all for gars to lay on the bottom of the tank
mine usually only does it when he is hunting but alot of others say there does it all the time

For what:screwy::nilly:
He asked how to get his fish to except prepared food instead of guppies due to the guppies apparently giving his fish, fish lice
Not how to give him better water conditions though it always helps the fish some
*note* wasnt trying to be mean, just stating a fact

i misread his thread i thought he said his gar stop eating at all, my gar did this once and it was because of water conditions i did a water change and let him settle in and he ate again normal, i would just wait let him grow a few more inches then see if he'll accept prepared foods

thanks famous for being understanding that i wasnt trying to be mean
how often is the gar going up and getting air
urs might be under feed or over feed and that might explain why hes laying on the bottom so much
whats his feeding schedule

hey there isa.... i had two gars in my tank right now. bought them last oct. 29th.. they where just 6-6.5" that time. I guess right now they are 8" long.... when i got them i did not feed them anything at all since they were new to the tank.i then the next day i bought 2 black mollies. I really dont know if they ate before i bought them so before i starve them i want to see 1st if they will eat the mollies. I also bought just two because from the get go i want them to have a variety of diet so that i will not just rely on live feeders.

after they ate the mollys i starve them for 2 or 3 days i think. i also bought dried krills (i bought them in the wet market) i tried to feed them this by hand fed. well not totally hand fed. i have this hemostat we used in holding periapical xray films in dental clinic. what i had observed. they usually snob the food if its just still but once u shake it a bit it will draw thier attention and since they are very hungry they will take a one... from there they started feeding dried krills.. but they dont seem to enjoy it specially the other gar that i have. then after that, i starve them for another day or two. then bought MP cut to bite size with out the head and the skin. they loved it.... from there on i had a peace of mind.. from time to time i feed them live goldfish just a reward and if i forgot to bring MP since my tank is in my clinic. now i'll try to introduce silversides or DILIS as what we call them here in the Philippines.

just try to starve him for 2-3 days or more... if he still doenst eat the food your trying to introduce to him. give some guppies. atleast 2 guppies each then start the process again.... try to shake or wiggle the food that your tryng to feed him just so to get his attention. the gar will approach it. good luck...

dj is that oct 29 07 or oct 29 08
if its 08 thats a good grow
if its 07 thats horrible grow

lepisosteus,

Sorry, its 08 sir. So i guess they had a good growth. thanks sir. this website really help me a lot. I am just a bit concern because me and my girlfriend want to add a green or red aro in the tank. if i feed them regularly or even once/twice every other day, they might grow up too fast and adding a new aro approx 7-8", might cause a problem.

will there be any conflict? like will they attack the aro or nip his fins or as long as they cant swallow the fish they wont attack it?

OK dj
1 check other forums for info on tank mates( mine has aggression issues and is housed by himself)
2 your gar is gonna rockit up a few more inches (5-8 i would say could be wrong)
3 dont be afraid to feed him, he needs it
4 gars can be fin nippers but usually wont kill it unless it can fit in its mouth
5 NEVER EVER TAKE ANYONES WORD FOR LAW WHEN IT COMES TO TANKMATES, except obvious mistakes (such as gar with a neon tetra or gar with a pack of red bellie paranna, my gar will attack any fish not bigger than him or afraid of him, hence why he stays be himself)

correction or number 2
rockit up a few more inches before slowing for a few mounths then speeding back up for a few mounths then slowing, so on and so on, till he nears his max size then he will grow very slowly till he stops

oh and plz do not call me sir
