Ok, i have a newly aquired Rope. He's in a 10 gallon by himself with a small comet goldfish and a femal betta.

I am going to get a 20 gallon to put him in. He's still pretty small, only about 7" MAX. He's not thick at all, very small mouth.

I also have a Leapord Ctenapoma in another 10 gallon that i want to put in the new 20 gallon also. They get to a maximum of 6", and really should have 20-30 gallons.
Heres a pic of a Ctenapoma to give you an idea

So my question is, will they be ok together?

The Ctenapoma is about 1 1/2" right now. Pretty small, but WAY too big for my rope to eat. My rope can barely choke down a 1/2" piece of earthworm. He almost did choke actually. :shakehead :screwy:

I know ropes grow REALLY slow, so i'm not worried about anything right now. I'm more worried about later on.
Will an adult rope eat a 4-6" Ctenapoma?
Or CAN they? Their mouths seem pretty darn small.

no worries their pretty slow and have small mouths even when full grown

Ok, great. thats a relief. I love my little Ctenopoma. Would want him to get snacked on. ;)

Thanks a lot.

Better news. I have both species in the same tank. The Ctenapoma is about two and a half inches, and the ropes are 12 and 13 inches. They get along great. I also had a baby Ctenapoma that was really only about an inch long, and he lived in the tank with the ropes for about a month before I worried too much about him and moved him. They'll be just fine :)

Thanks Keeper.

I got my 20 and set it up last night. I put everyone in and they're doing great.

They even starting eating an hour or two after i put them in. Chowed down on blood worms. :D

Thanks a lot.

I'll have to take a picture. My Ctenopoma has gotten twice as big as when i got him a couple months ago.
They seem to grow at an average pace, not too slow not too fast.

The rope is already one of my favorite fish i have ever owned. He's so cool to watch slither along the bottom like a snake, and I just love his increadible appetite. :)

Be VERY careful when you do your water changes. If you add too much water, they WILL swim right up into your filter, knock the top off and play around on the floor for awhile. I keep my waterline at least three inches from the top of the tank after the last experience - they both escaped in less than 4 hours.

YA be very careful to have a tight lid so they dont get out. When I was working in my lfs we had ropes there and I was constently pulling them back to there own tank from the adjoining tank. I love them I think they are pretty cool but just have to make sure that they have no where to escape to!

I watched one of mine - he didnt escape through any holes where the aerator goes in or anything like that... he went thru the stream of water spilling from the filter up INTO the filter, over the cartridge, knocked the top off the filter and went into the sink. It was NOT a great trick. The female had jumped earlier the same way - we weren't home and she was bone dry before my boyfriend found her. She's still swimmin away like usual. We got lucky.

YIKES

I knew they needed a tight fitting hood with no holes, but i didnt know they would pull stuff like that.

CRAP,

I hope mine isnt a crispy critter when i get home.

Now i want to just leave work and go check. Grrr

I'll make sure to batten down the hatches when i get home so the little jailbird cant escape.
