Well they can survive outside of the water for a good deal of time, but if you are gone for too long... or have cats or dogs... you could have a serious problem. Just make sure the tank isn't too full to allow access up the flow into the filter, and provide them with good cover so they don't have an urge to find a place to hide elsewhere. They're great fish. I've had mine for probably about five months now, and they're to the point now where they prefer RRs over beefheart If I can figure out how to email pics from my cell to the internet then I'll post a whole bunch.
