I've had to relocate my discus right now in my 125 in a net. Unfortunately my 46 gallon is going through an ammonia spike right now and have been safe in the 125 in the net. I was wondering if they would be ok with uaru and red/green severums for a short time period. Looking to see if anyone has done this before.

I have a uaru in with my discus since he was 2" .. no problems so far .. except , he ate every plant in the tank including anubias and is starting to out compete the discus for food.. uaru is roughly 7-8" now same size as discus.. uaru will be moved shortly... cichlids seem to have their own temperament / personality , Ive had Sevs that where terrors and others docile.. fwiw.. gl

Uaru and severums are both much more pushy at feeding time. Their temperament would probably be okay with larger discus but they will outcompete them for food at every meal. For that reason I don't recommend it, unless you had a very large tank and a system for ensuring your discus could find enough to eat.

My red marlboro discus is the undisputed ruler of my tank lol. He beat up the blue angelfish (formerly dominant) after about 2 weeks in the tank. Don't underestimate discus. They're cichlids too!

Yes, discus are cichlids, but they are much slower eaters than a uaru. If you've ever seen uaru at feeding time, you'll know what I'm talking about.

Agreed. They pick at stuff. I was just commenting on aggression.

It's a short term stay for the discus in there anyway

IMO it's one of those things that you couldn't recommend but might be possible with the right setup and individual fish-- for example, as mentioned, severums can vary in tankmates they'll tolerate; also, ime discus can vary widely in how timid or assertive they are.

I've seen (and done) some crazy things with discus. Pretty early in my discus years I kept them with all manner of crazy tankmates and had them be just fine, some of which I'd now say not to do, even though it worked at the time-- for whatever reason.

Based only on my own experience, while discus are naturally slow eaters that like to graze and pick, I've had them adapt to a busy tank and compete just fine for food, IF-- and it's a big IF-- they still feel comfortable in the tank, despite whatever unconventional tankmates... among the fish I successfully kept with discus were mesonauta and red tailed chalceus (these weren't the craziest I tried), never tried severums and discus, though. (For the record, over time I became more conventional as a discus keeper, mainly for aesthetic reasons.)

The potential rub with doing something unconventional with discus is if they're stressed or uncomfortable they can stop eating or do the turn dark and hide in a corner thing. Not a problem I had back in the day, but not something you want, either.

Like I said this is a very temporary move for them. There tank had gone through an ammonia spike and still is. Just being housed in separate quarters for the time being
