I just recently got a 150 gallon tank. im going to be running a fluval FX5. I have a red tail catfish about a ft long and an oscar about 3 or 4 inches long. My mom is going crazy with all the aquariums and pets in the house. I have a painter turlte about the size of a DVD case ( best way to decribe it lol) I have seen people with turtles in their tropical tank. The Question is will it work for me if i put these guys together.

Your RTC is probably big enough to not be bothered by your turtle. But the Oscar maybe caught by it. Fish are a big part of a turtles diet. I personally would not keep them together no matter what the size of the turtle or the fish. JMO.

My opinion.. you should not mix turtles with fish.. there are many reasons why you shouldn't.. One is turtles are very messy .. the quality of water will go down hill fast..turtle need a place to bask with a light.. turtles will bite fish..just not a good idea..
Turtles eat fish....so don't get too fond of the fish. Even fish considerably larger than the turtle are fair game for getting nipped, which in turn can stress the fish, and lead to death.

You need a filter to keep the water clean. A pump will only keep the water moving so it doesn't grow stagnant.

Your turtle needs a dry place to rest. You should also have a basking lamp positioned close to this so that he can bask in the heat and get the proper nutrients from the light. They sell specific bulbs for turtles (reptile bulbs).

You can feed the turtle in the tank. Drop turtle food pellets into the water (don't overfeed), feed live fish, and you can also offer fruits and veggies on the dry spot.

Is fish food okay? No, no, and no. He is a turtle, not a fish.

Other recommendations....Turtles can carry salmonella. It's important that you wash your hands after handling, even if you just touch the food dishes or place your hand in the water. This is especially important for anyone 5 and under.

Fair comment on what everyone is saying here as as a rule fish and turtles together will not normally work. However, I have 2 yellow belly sliders, they were in a tank in my house with 2 oscars and grew up together never getting on at each other. and now they are 2 years I have moved them too my outside pond with about 10 5-10inch koi and 50 small goldfish. As far as I have seen so far they get along fine, turtles just let fish swim past with no nipping or anything.

I think this will be partly down to me never feeding live fish too them and also if you keep it well fed should not be an issue.

They are very dirty animals though so be prepared to clean filter and do water changes every few days.

Enjoy turtle keeping I love mine. They were only around 1-2" when i got them and now they are 6" and 8".

Thanks

Most people might not, but my 7 inch RES lives very peacefully with 1 convict cichlid, and there is a mate for the convict coming sometime this week.

Convict mate is in the tank and doing great. I do hope you know that red tailed catfish will need a much much bigger tank (pond).
