I need to upgrade the 30g sump to a 75g for the 265g. I'm looking, and measuring, but am afraid to buy the sump tank if it doesn't fit. I'm thinking a 75g which is 48" x18". I need to do this while the tank is up and running, so I need to fit it through the front of the stand.

I'm also thinking about putting in a fx5 in the tank, but I don't know how that would hold up with my achara catfish and algae eater, as they tend to bang things around....and, I don't like the idea of there being holes in the lids, whereas now I don't have to worry about anybody committing suicide, or soaking my floors

any experiences?

before ppl start hashing me about how small the current sump is...it came with the tank about 1 1/2yrs ago. At that time I had never done a sump and was afraid to even think about upgrading.

I have a 4 foot sump on my 220. The only way it goes in and out of the stand is through the top. Maybe your doors are bigger though. 8 foot tank?

dangit..that's what I was afraid of..only being able to get it through the top. It's a 7 foot long tank....84" x 24" x 30"

I really don't want to break this thing down, and bribe some friends with beer money to help move it off the stand and back. Plus to catch the catfish...I'm trying to not think about doing this when we move in the next couple years

guess maybe I will start checking into spending another $300 for a fx5...

I don't have that many fish in there, but the waste load from the catfish and algae eater are affecting the others. I know I need a bigger filter now

1. Drain the tank as much as possible
2. Brace the stand with 2x4s
3. Chop out the support that's in the way with a sawzall.
4. Insert sump tank.
5. Reinstall front support.

Note: I would never try this, but if you want to, it's fine with me.

This is essentially how people replace structural supports in basements. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. The key thing is to make sure that your temporary supports are secure before cutting anything. Just my 2 cents.

I had to do the same thing with my 230g 6 ft tank I probably shouldnt but left tank full and slowly removed 1 spport at a time it left only 1 support and the 2x4s in the corners. Then I put the 70g sump under and put back in supports nothing moved but stand was built really heavy with real 3/4 inch ply wood. I would check how solid your stand is with good solid corners and lots of support in the back of the stand and drain50 percent of water I would think you should be safe but may want to check with a carpenter. Better safe than sorry.

thanks for the ideas... we actually did consider cutting into the stand temporarily, but so afraid to do so.

I put up a thread a couple months ago about putting in another 30g sump, but would really have to think about how to make that one work, and to make sure of no future spill overs (we rent a townhouse btw).

would it make any sense to run a fluval 405 from the sump? Put the inlet underneath all the media were there's open space for the water flow, and the outlet on the other side where the pumps are to return the water back? THat would give a decent breeding ground for the bacteria, and would just have bioballs in it....

I took out three more fish out of that tank to help things along

I tested the water...H2o is OK...not as good as what I'd like to see. Ammonia was between zero and .25....just slightly discolored, but not enough for actual /25....

ph was off the charts....well below 6.2....VERy yellow. I've been having this problem all year dispute the water changes. Didn't test anything else yet. Will tomorrow as I did a massive water change yesterday and cleaned out the foam in the sump.

this tank is big enough for just the catfish waste...but I have other fish that will need to go in there, so I need heavy duty filtration...

PLEASE any help is greatly appreciated

Can you go through the side? Cut out the side panel and then replace with a door or put some moulding on the piece and put put it back.

Or custum build the largest sump that would fit out of acyrlic

I had this problem putting a Marineland Model 4 acrylic sump in the bottom of my Aqueon 210 tank stand. I had to rip one of the boards out that went from the back to the front. There are two. It was really easy to remove and I nailed it back into place after I replaced it. It is probably more stable now than before due to the poor quality nails it had.
