I just got 2 red devils yesterday, I tryed to get a male and female but by the way they are acting i think i got 2 males. Both are very young about 1.5" each, 1 is slightly larger than the other. They came out of the same tank with quite a few others. They got along great in my 75 gallon for about 2 hours. Then i left for 2 hours when i came back the larger one had ran the other fish the whole time he was exhausted but no wounds I put him in a breeder tank for the night to rest and realeased him again this morning. they are doing a little better. But the larger one will still take after him quite often I have only seen him get ahold of him once. Wandering if i am going to have to seperate them. Please go easy on me if i am doing something wrong i am new at this and would like some advise. Is there a way to sex them this small?

I don't think they play well togethor...you should probably return one and try to get a female.

Thats what i figuered is there anyway to know I am getting a female when they are this small or do i keep trying till they get along that dosn't sound fun or responsible for the poor fish.

When they're that small and unsexable, many of us buy 6-8 or so, grow them out and hope for a pair. If the 75g tank is the largest you have, you are going to need to have a divider handy when they mature and start to breed. Otherwise the male will almost certainly kill the female. GL

Good post!

Two RD's almost never work out in a tank that size. The only time I've been able to mix them without problems are in very large tanks (300+).

Sorry to sound stupid but does getting more bring down the aggression level or what? Wouldn't have a problem with getting more except the tank size and i don't have a bigger one currently. would love one but not for a couple more months unless i want a divorce more!!

it does not reduce aggression, but in theory it lowers the aggression per individual fish because it has more targets, sooner you can get a bigger tank the better although i think an egg crate divider should come first.

Thanks for the advise, they are doing a lot better but tending to stay to there own sides of the tank. I will have to go at least get a divider tonight and then think about what i will do next.

I think you will be fine with a pair in that tank, at least for a while. Not two males though.
