I'm planning to set up a fish tank with sand but i wanted to include a turtle. Just curious.. if a turtle catches sand in the mouth and swallows it... will i cause any harmfull effects that will be come dangerous?
Oh yeah, one more question, Is it wise to use lace rock if i were to include the turtle? i mean i'm just afraid the turtle might accidentally cut & injur itself from the ruff edges? Has anyone had any problems?

I don't think any animal would want to swallow sand. I would imagine they would spit it out would you swallow dirt?

Howdy,

I wouldn't generalize that. Many birds eat sand for digestive purposes.

Besides that, turtles live in the wild and, generally, there's plenty of sand. Don't worry. Pick a rock that's smooth, like a river rock, if you're worried about the turtle getting hurt.

One thing to consider: Only house a turtle with much bigger fish. Otherwise, they'll end up as turtle food. Also, a planted tank is not possible with turtles since they tear out the plants by their swimming motions. Often, they also eat the plants.

I love people that take things so literally. Dogs eat grass for digestive purposes. Who cares.

Sand will pass thru the digestive system I know fish who ingested gravel and developed internal blockages and died because of it-Anne
