Hi all, about a month ago I got a pair of synspilum from Rapps, male 4.5'' female 4''.I was wondering how long it will take ,if at all, for them to bond ?.Right now the male shows zero interest,in fact chases her off.If it's going to happen,at what size should I see some courting?.They share a 125g with a 6'' black belt;)

hmmm its hard to tell but i think i had them around 6 weeks and they were around the 5" mark but it was once their colours started to show properly, my male is quite a bit bigger then the female now tho. the first time i didnt really notice much bonding to start they just seemed to get it on was a complete suprise to me. the male still seems to do alot of chasing the female away maybe thats just his 'chat up line' lol

Does Rapps (your source) know how old they are? That's pretty small for a Synspila; they get big. The female in particular seem to go through "Kodak" moments where they kill anything and everything in the tank, including their mate.

Though a lot of literature sets them up as being reasonable, I don't. They're probably one of the Flowerhorn base fish and act accordingly. I'd separate them.

Are they colouring up nicely? Take a look at my femael Syn. at over 10 inches in the body. She killed two of her own young that were over four inches easilly, and almost killed her mate, who she had spawned twice with in a tank over 200 gallons.

Yes, there are personality differences and even mellow Jaguars, for instance. She has no issue with my male Oscar but killed a female Oscar her own size by pummelling it with her head.

"Conspecific" they are in a big way!

wow no way i literally have zero aggression from mine!

rtague, there's no way to say when or even if the male and female you have will pair up. Unfortunately it sometimes takes more than putting one male with one female, though a lot of times that will work. Just be patient and give them the best conditions you can and nature will take its course...if it's going to that is.

dannyboy, beautiful pair. :)

dwight, I've always believed that synspilum were one of the primary species involved in the flowerhorn creation but for the color rather than aggression. In general they are not all that aggressive but there will be the occasional homicidal maniac in the species.

:)

all my syns are mild,i started to see alot of color chances around the 10 to 12 month mark, now at a year and ahlf all mine seem to have exploded in color. (hint alot of veggies in their diet brings out their colors, all mine love romaine lettuce and peas)i also fed spirulina pellets, krill, hakiri gold(every day),shrimp pellets, cichlid excel.my pair bonded at 8 months but took awhile to spawn so it depends, good food and clean water will work wonders.
