i have a 20 gallon long with 7 zebra danios and 3 cory cats and im going to breed fancy guppies in it. will the other fish eat my babies? if the will what kind of hideouts should i put in there to help them stay alive until i put them in the baby tank?

Zebras, and guppies both eat baby guppies, a mat of artificial grass will help, or get a brooding net and put the ripe females in it.

how about one of those breeding things made of plastic? how do i know when the females are about to have babies?

The breeding cages work but I always found them a pain and haven't seriously raised guppies in decades so didn't really care how many got eaten. As for telling when they are ready, that is the hard part, all I can say is vigilance and practice, also make note of delivery dates on a calender for each female and you will see that they get pretty regular.

I don't like the plastic traps, I tried keeping my baby sailfin mollys in there for awhile and they started dieing on me, I moved them to a net and they stopped dying...better water circulation perhaps?

I wouldn't doubt it, the net type work pretty well.

i would suggest seperating the fry from the parents or the community.

Fish are oportunistic, if it fits in their mouths it will likely get eaten..

That being said. Provide plenty of cover if you will be keeping fry in the community tank..

I am a fan of a nursery tank myself.. I am not into guppys, but if I were, I would pull the mama & still provide plenty of cover in the nursery also. This way mamma won't concider them lunch (as much). Remove the mama ASAP,.

I recommend using common water in the nursery. I use main tank water for partials. until I devise a plan to comingle the water. I have a plan, just not the time to put it in place just yet. Have to build a special stand.

i figured out something today while doing a water change and a filter rinse. if the other fish dont eat the babies the filter will lol. but i have a nursery tank im just worried about the fish while there in there before i get them out.
