So this morning I noticed my young peacock bass has a split tail fin.The split looks to be all the way down to the tail and I am not sure how the fish managed to do that as the tank is a bare twenty gallon being used as a grow out.Tankmates are a group of silver dollarsl, and a small indo dat who are all pretty peaceful for the most part.
I have a large dat in another tank that split it's fin some time ago and it seems ad if it is going to remain that way.I am hoping the same wont be true with this cichla.
Here are a few photos.

Right down to the body like that, in my experience it is unlikely that it will heal properly. It is likely to remain with a split in it.
That is what I fear.

It may heal. I have a 12" frontosa in my front colony that somehow split his tail in three spots all the way through to the base of his body last year. It took awhile (about 6 months if memory is correct) but now you would never know he had a split at all.

That's encouraging,Steve.I bought this little guy from a local shop a few months ago and while I could not tell exactly which species it was as it was much smaller I had my suspicions so I brought it home.I would certainly hate to have invested all this time and work into the fish to have it wind up with a deformed tail fin.

I had a small kelberi that had it's tail bitten off entirely before I rescued him from a local store. Was right down to the base. I stuck him in a bare tank alone and it took a long long time around 6/7 months but it did grow back. At first it was a strange colour and shape but it got better and better and now you wouldn't know.

Remarkable regeneration, and there is little point in me even asking which one it was.

I bet in 12 months you won't even be able to tell it happened
