Ok i currently have a 120g saltwater aquarium runnning.

I wanna make it a reef tank i was just wondering if what i got will be ok

1/2 crushed coral substrate
80lbs LR (slowly buying to reach 130lbs)
Coralife superskimmer for 125gallon
2-rena 300watt heaters
2 power heads
Fluval fx5

Now i was told that the canister filter is usless? Is this true. What if i clean it out once a week. What can i put in this filter to help me out??

DAN

if you clean it regularly it shouldnt cause problems

I would ove to switch but to much of a hassle, My aquarium is all done ready for fish so id rather not switch it out.

I was told as long as i clean the filter once a week i should be ok.

What medias would you recomend putting in there?

I was thinking like hex noodles bio balls? good idea or bad idea

lots of mechanical media some bio balls wont hurt clean it once a week twice would be better

According to the older books and Saltwater Aquariums for Dummies there is nothing wrong with using a canister or HOB filter and they were often reccomended for fish only tanks.

All or most of my LFS stores run the canisters and HOB and the one guy said he cleans his once every 6mnths?? im not sure if i go that long with it DAMN

Ok in my fluval fx5 i have carbon in top middle i have matrix by seachem (gets rid of nitrate, nitrite, and ammonias)
In the bottom i have bio balls. Should i have bio balls in there or should i go with a pre filter??

Also what do i clean once a week? everything or just sponges?
