Will these tank mates work?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thats awesome man! They are looking spiff for sure, looks like you got at least one potential female as well!!! Kudos!!!

Don't worry about the lents being shy, they are one of the more active, showy pikes, especially as they start to put on size. My lady is always the first pike front and center when I walk in the room. :)

The only live food I feed my pikes is earthworms. All of them are either on pellets of some sort or frozen foods. Much cheaper and healthier for sure. Definitely try getting them on to Hikari Massivore or Carnivore sinking pellets. They pack a lot of nutrients, fill them up quick, and give some serious growth rates.

James ~ Lents are some of the bruisers of the Lugubris world, pushing 14" easily, with the possible potential to eventually reach close to 16". It would be an old fish though.

You mention that you think at least one is a female. Which would you consider the female? There are two that hang out together all the time. The other is included when they are cruising around that tank, but these two can often be found in the same cave. I will try to post some photos of them in the cave together soon.

The are currently eating frozen smelt, and some brine shrimp and I suspect them of eating the NLS pellets that I include with everyone else's food. Someone suggested that the NLS Thera A that I have has garlic in it and may be enticing them as well. What do you think? I have witnessed them eating the smelts and the bring shrimp though.

Get them off of brine and onto Mysis shrimp as soon as you can. The brine is just too small and doesn't really have much nutrition in it. Mysis is the shizz though! Especially so if you can find the Piscine Energetics brand, they are just awesome!!!

NLS is just a great brand of fish food, most fish readily accept it as it is, so it doesn't really surprise me that your lents would be eating it. It does help pikes to try new foods though if they already see other fish eating it. ;)

The lent with its back turned to the camera in the second picture. Its also the main one in focus in the sixth and seventh pictures is the one I was referring to for being your most potential out of the group for being a female. You can just barely see the clear/white stripe coming in on the dorsal. Exactly how my female looked when I got her. :)

Thanks for letting me know what to look for. I will watch that one to see if he/she is one of the two that hang together all the time. There is another one with less spangling in the vertical bars down its back. I was wondering if that is something due to age, or sex.

They are eating brine that is in the tank for other fish. I will try the mysis soon. Right now they are taking the frozen whole smelt as the bulk of their food and the other as "sides" LOL

Mine are taking frozen krill and bloodworms. No luck with pellets yet but they are still shy. I dump the frozen food in and bacl away form the tank and they slowly start coming out and going to town on it.

Well, I feel pretty lucky, these fish I have are sooooo active, and up at the glass, and swimming around the tank all the time. I am amazed at how quickly they acclimated. One of them is a real eater, and the others are starting to come around. I will start to offer the Mysis soon and see what they think.

Well, I have been feeding these fish (along with everyone in the tank) frozen silversides, Brine, and NLS pellets. They have taken a few of the pellets, ravage the silversides, and tend to leave the brine alone unless very hungry. Good thing the other fish love the brine.

Well, today I finally got some PE Mysis, holy cow! It was a frenzy in the tank. my psittacus went nuts, and is loving this food, the Lents are super fat now, and everyone else is looking good too.

I have one lent I am fairly certain is a female, another I suspect of being female, and then one fairly certain male. I noticed the near certain female has a lot of blue tint to her gill plate.

On another note, there are a few injuries on the head and bodies of two of the Lents. I am watching them to see that they heal and to (fingers crossed) make sure it is not HITH. I do 150 Gallon+ water changes weekly and the temp is 84+ and am trying to feed good food, so hopefully they will heal and all will be fine. They are small injuries, and probably not anything anyone sees by myself.

I am so enamored with these fish. I have also noticed my other fish seem to be much more colored and active since their addition. Just wish I had added them earlier. Thank you all for your help, and information as I lurked in this section waiting for the right opportunity to jump in and buy some of these amazing fish.
