SO. Ive been considering getting a shoal of fish..ANd I was wonder if I went with something like

4 x Black neons
4 x blue tetras
4 x Cardinals
2 x Neons
2 x Rummy Nose
1 x lemon tetra

would they all shoal together? Thats just an example of what I mean..

Opinions?

They are all tetras so they should. They may branch of with their own kind but fish are not always the smartest. My friend has an orange-red mollie that hangs around 2 male rosey barbs even though there are 2 black mollies in the tank too.

i don' think fish will shoal with other species, at least not intentionally. if they do school with other species, they probably prefer not to. for the fish's sake, you need to probably add additional fish for each species so as to have at least 6 to 8 fish per species. i think that would guarantee schooling.

My neons and rummy noses always used to shoal together. I think it'll either be a hit or miss attempt.

It was really out of curiosity but I think it would be cool if it worked.. :D

my black neons, and cardinals did not shoal mixed up together when they shoaled.
at first they did in the 90g tank but when I moved them to the 55g they did not shoal at all they actually branched out as they're more comfortable as theres only plecos, dwarf cichlids in there that do not bother them they stay in certain zones. My cardinals like the lower level zone while my black neons like the higher zones. My green fire tetras I only have a pair left they like the very very top zone.

I think its relating to the size of the tank itself and how comfortable they are- if they feel threatened they'll shoal given the size of the tank-

Good point! I agree. Tank size does come into play.

I had an otocinclus that loved to shoal with my rummys... i did see however that my lemons never shoaled with my rummys.

it's a hit or miss, but from my experiences the small bodied tetras hung out with eachother and the large bodied tetras hung out with each other.. and the two never mixed/shoaled

anything is possiable... my african arowana would shoal with the congo tetras as would the small thinbar datnoids and the giant gourami (when they were together they were all under 6")...
