i want to make my tank sanded on the bottom will the fish be alright if i do it when there in there

I believe the OP is stating is it ok to put in sand substrate with the fish already in the tank

Your fish will be fine. Just make sure to rinse the sand really well. Most importantly, turn your filters off while you add the sand. Let it sit with just an air stone in the for an hour or so until the debris settles.

thanks guys yeh I did mean sand subtrate lol

You should be fine. Just make sure you buy the right sand. All sand is not created equally. Stay away from mixing sand for concrete. Play sand is OK but its a pain to clean. I mean a real pain.

If you are going the local hadware store route, check out some of the larger grain blasting sands or the play sand (again very hard to clean) as it has been serilized.

pool filter sand is a good way to go as well

If you're all talking about Silica sand it is very cheap. Like $8 for a 40 or 50 lb. bag. The thing about this stuff is that it's really bad to breathe in the dust from it! So wear a dust mask while you wash it off the first time. Also, it has some really sharp pieces in it. ** I used the tube from my gravel cleaner to put sand into tank: Fill the tube with the washed sand. Then with hands coverings both ends, hold it over the part of the tank you want it in. Take hand off bottom of tube and put that end into tank and slowly let air into the top of tube. This way, the sand slides into tank with out a big mess. Hope this is helpful.

yeah i bought pool filter sand 50# for $9, rinsed it real good and changed from gravel to that with my rhom in the tank and he was fine. i used an unused dustpan and very slowly placed scoops on the bottom. (my rhom was only 3", so no i didnt get bit)

I still have this confusion... some say sand is easier to clean than gravel.... with my gravel tank i just put in my vaccum and done...my next tank is sand... so still a bit worried...

I think sand particles kill the filter faster than gravel though?
