They are called algae eaters, but I dont think algae is actually there main food source. I believe they take a meatier diet, but Iam not 100% on that. If he's already going after your bircher I would say you need to seperate asap.

In all my years of raising fish this is #1 of all of the fish that are suitable for a aquarium to avoid.
get rid of it. sometimes "algae-eating" fish don't mess with bichirs, but it's always a threat. I've had 3 flagtails and only 1 has sucked on slimecoat.
sooner or later that thing's gonna suck on your bichir's slimecoat...you know you gotta get rid of it.
