I came home to find my second GT getting eaten alive by the other fish. He has always been the most sub dominate fish in the tank but would just swim away asap. I found him just taking the beating as if he was giving up on life, not swimming away but just letting everyone peck at him. So I pulled him out and put him in another tank to heal. I have salt and melafix in there for him. Will he be ok? Will the scales grow back or is this permanent. Im giving him to my sister inlaw but I want him to be 100% before I do. Any input?

he should heal no problem, im sure in a week or so of good water and no stress he will be back to 100%, it doesnt look like anything too serious GOOD LUCK! and also im not sure if you should mix salt with melafix i would just use one or the other and i would keep the lights off as well

I use Mela and salt together to no adverse effects. Usually not as strong with the salt. Mela will help prevent infection as salts are good for all-around recovery.
He might have little scar, but thats not all that bad of an injury. He will recover quick.

Thanx for the encouraging advice everyone. I just want to make sure he will be ok. Like I said he is the most sub dominate fish so he always takes beatings. Nothing like this though. A cut and loss of scales here and there from swimming into the decor. BUt to see him give up like that made me worried.

It will most likely heal with no problems. You will need to watch your GT carefully when you put him back into your larger tank. If he gets beat up repeatedly he may eventually end up being scarred. My male Herotilapia multispinosa has 3 nice sized scars from a mayan at the lfs that I got him at gave him. My female has even worse scars from her mate. I recently had to separate them permanently because whenever they are not breeding or already have fry he is extremely abusive.

Good luck!

cichlids are amazingly tough fish, he should heal up, no worries . . . I was expecting a lot worse after reading your post, was kinda relieved to see the actual condition of the fish :)
