Will this heal?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You don't need salt or Melafix. Keep his water warm and really clean and it will heal on its own in a week or so. I've had severums with gashes in their heads from running into driftwood while chasing each other, and it usually heals over in a day or two. It's just missing scales.

Clean water is the key. If it's not clean, there's always the chance he'll end up with some kind of secondary infection.

It will most likely heal with no problems. You will need to watch your GT carefully when you put him back into your larger tank. If he gets beat up repeatedly he may eventually end up being scarred. My male Herotilapia multispinosa has 3 nice sized scars from a mayan at the lfs that I got him at gave him. My female has even worse scars from her mate. I recently had to separate them permanently because whenever they are not breeding or already have fry he is extremely abusive.

Good luck!
Im giving him to my sister inlaw. She has a tank with lil african cichs in it and always showed interest in my primary GT. Hopefully this guy will heal up nicely and show his true colors. He always been drabby colorwise because of the beatings. Its time he had a real home.

I had to setup an old tank that hasnt been in use for a few years now. It wasnt cycled or anything. I threw in some gravel and water from the old tank and hoped for the best. I didnt have a choice. As I said he was being eaten alive, and im really not exaggerating. So because of the unknown of the "new" tank i threw in the salt and melafix for good measure. So far so good.

100% it will; heal didnt read your thing just looked at the pics and from what i see it was from a little fight, if thats the case separate the fish and add some salt for this guy and keep up with water changes for cleaner water

Wait a minute, hes going in with africans at your sisters place? Please, that is a sad fish if he just gave up like that, dont put him in harms way again. This site can be so depressing sometimes...

He is 6 inches and the 2 africans she has are 1 in. She throwing in the GT in hopes of turing it into a sa/ca tank. She not a fan of the africans anymore. I dont think the africans will be a problem as of right now unless you think otherwise? If anything I figure he would get a lil more confidence with them being he is 6 x their size.

I guess it depends on the type of Africans. Are their water parameters the same as those that the GT would be in? Are they territorial/aggressive Africans? I've had 2" brichardi dominate a 60 gallon tank, harassing the hell out of everything in it. Just because the GT is larger doesn't mean that he won't be dive-bombed by an angry African cichlid that is defending territory. The same is true for CA/SA cichlids, too. I have seen things like Laetacara get extremely violent and nippy during spawning and fry-rearing.

If your GT has proven to be a bit on the passive side, and if he's already stressed out from all the moves by the time he ends up at your sister's, it could just be another disaster waiting to happen.

i doubt it will be a problem if they are just little labs or something from petsmart, and there are only two of them, as long as she isnt doing anything to harden her water for them then it should definitely be fine, if he is that much larger i would actually be worried about the africans once he settles in but since she doesnt care then its not a big deal

Yeah, in fact when you Gt reaches 7+ inches there is a good possibility that he will eventually eat the africans. GTs are really not that aggressive but as they get older it takes less for them to show their aggressive side. Plus when they get larger you have to follow the old "Oscar" rule, If it can fit in it's mouth there is a good chance it's a snack.
