Will this heal?

It really depense on if it's hurt inside of the body. In this case, it will be game over.
If it has just fins bites, it will recover soon.

jd's are funny, mine tolerated other tank mates and then I moved him and he became a right grump
now I can't put any other fish with him except his missus the gjd,as he'd fight them
was jd with any tank mates before?
I personally find if you put them with others from baby they seem to tolerate
adding In tank mates after its lived alone, can be hit or miss
but saying that, some jd are fine and one day just turn into jack the ripper :-p lol

He's been with tank mates all his life, well since I've had him. He's been with a larger Oscar, many many other jds when I first tried to get a pair. Convicts, fire mouths. He's even been with fry from convicts and never took a bite out of anything, he's always been the one to run away. I think it's because this tank has been just the pair of jds for quite a while now and he claimed the whole tank as his territory. That'll change

I don't believe that there's anything wrong with him inside. Mostly because he swims fine. And always a has. hes been a typical Oscar. Already likes to play with my finger. And is always greeting everyone in the dining room where his tank is

ah that's interesting, so for whatever reason jd must have felt threatened,or maybe Oscar tried to dominate? or possibly cos the pair?

Most likely territory issues. Perhaps the little Oscar went near "his cave" and that started the fight. As I high doubt a little 1.5 inch Oscar will try to dominate a 5-6 inch jd the same day I put them together. I mean the oscars just a baby. Haha

I agree
he must have done something that the jd's tank mates already knew about like don't go near that etc and baby o must have done some thing like you just said
fish psychology is hard isn't it lol:) (well for me it is sometimes :D)

I think fish are pretty simple. It was probably a case of get the hell out of m space. But being that they are in a tank there's no place to go
