I've been having an algae problem. I've added a bristle nose pleco but he doesn't eat much of the algae anymore. I bought this product a while back at my LFS. The owner told me it would take care of the algae. I'm concerned that this might kill my plants along with the algae. Has anyone used this in a planted tank?

I use the tetra algaecide in my planted tanks. It really only targets the blue green algae and the plants are fine. It comes in a little yellow bottle and you don't need much at all

That looks like its used for salt water.

Check your phosphates. Plants need some but if there's too much, algae grows wild.

I've never checked for phosphates. I only check for nitrate nitrite and ammonia

Even tap water can have phosphate. So if there's uneaten food or high waste in the water, phosphate can grow lots of algae.
how are the other parameters?
Use R.O?

Need a better description or even better yet pics of the algae. It could be hair algae or staghorn or black brush/black beard algae or even others that may match your description.

What light are you using? How long is the light cycle for? Are you currently dosing a fertilization program/schedule? If so what all is being dosed?

Not to be argumentative but, I don't think phosphate is the issue.

All of my planted tank experience tells me That's not the case. I dose the estimative index. Have for some time now. I know others along with the creator of the system that do as well. The method is to supply non limiting nutrients by way of basically dosing more then needed. I dose nitrate potassium and phosphate every other day. The Other days I dose iron and micro nutrients. Weekly water change.

I can test phosphate with any kit and have it maxed out but no algae issues.

Need more info from the op to determine the cause. The type of algae and the fix.

I wouldn't use any algeacyde in your tank.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have t5 lights that are on about 10 hrs a day. I don't dose at all. I will add some pics. Thank you
