Will this pond work Need as much info as possible!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ive seen very active stingrays that will swim around all stratas, overall not a good idea, i dont understand why you only want it to be 12" deep, you should be able go deeper then that ( even if you are lazy)

consider the disk size and tail length you will need bigger.... everybody on here that has a ray will tell you there rays are always swimming up the sides of the tank.... i told you 6" bigger cause it will make a big difference in a year as the ray starts really going.... i have kept strigatta pike with rays all rays were killed... oscars might eat the eyes or just fowl the water up

Ok i admit i dont know that much about rays but to think six inches would be the differance to life and death is crazy. i wont have strigata pikes i will probably keep Cr. comprissceps.
Quote i dont understand why you only want it to be 12" deep, you should be able go deeper then that ( even if you are lazy) Quote :banhim::banhim::banhim::shakehead:jaw::jaw:Wow i didnt think any person on this forum was that rude!!! without even knowing the reason i dont want it deeper! i would love to dig the pond ten feet square and five feet deep! it is simply because of two reasons, space and budget if i made it twice as deep, I might, it would be 300 gallons anybody who has had a 300 gallon tank must know that the filters are MUCH more expensive. Sure i could double the size and cost but not if i can avoid it. so call me stupid and cruel two my fish but i think a ray in an eight foot pond is fine. how many of you keep betta's in bowls???

6" does make a huge difference it doesnt seem like it but it will and so will the 24" deep... in the end the choice is yours.... im only offering you some info to help ya out

Larger volumes of water = more stable water parameters.
Deeper water + wider dimensions = more room for fish to sort themselves out and have a preferred region of the tank to call their own.

Smaller dimensions will lead to problems......PERIOD.

Plus, in my humble opinion, (1) one ray (any species) generates 2-3 times as much fecal material and 10 fold the ammonia of any similiar sized freshwater fish (non-ray).
Plus......them have a increadible metabolic demand requiring more calories then any similiar sized, non-ray, freshwater fish.

Take all this into consideration.

Deeper water is also going to have more stable temp. deeper water will also protect your guys from predation. i know of several people who have lost pond fish to birds, cats, racoons, etc. Just about everyone that builds a pond also ends up wishing theyd made it bigger, so just skip that part and start bigger.
As for expense - if you cant afford to take care of them right, dont do it. For that volume of water just set a tank up on your patio. youll probably get a better view of the fish that way as well.
Just thought id throw my 2 cents in here.

I may not do rays:(

I think instead i will put a pbass, aruana, and pikes.
i would love to get one but everyone on the forum would hate me:irked: even though i KNOW that the ray would be living in a smaller tank then that oh well.

no hate.... well from me atleast.... we just sudjested going bigger on your pond and consider the cichlids being a bad idea...
