Will This Sand/Gravel Work In A Freshwater Setup?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The stuff thats sold for 'play' sand has very few standards. You have to concider what it's bieng sold for. I'n most cases playsand ends up bieng little more than an outdoor catbox so consistancy of size....cleanliness....composition...mean nothing.

Pool filter sand on the other hand has to meet the standards for the application....clean...consistant size...PH nutral...

There are REASONS that cheaper alternitives are cheaper...

i have used the Quikrete brand Commercial grade Medium sand in 4 of my tanks with no water chemistry or filter problems. the only issue i have with the sand is that it is not uniform. . . a bag you buy one week might be a certain size or color, but if you go back a couple months later, or go to a different store, the sand is going to be different. one type i have is a nice coarse white sand that doesn't get sucked up the python. the other, bought a year later, is much finer and a dark golden color.

i don't know about the gravel - i've quit using gravel substrates altogether because they just trap too much debris.

im going to try the quickrete commercial medium sand. im going to purchase a play sand bag, and a meduim commercial bag. ill see which is better and ill keep you guys updated!
