Will this sand work?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I believe mine was a mix of 30/40, as long as it's sand and not gravel sized, then you'll be good. That black bull stuff is garnet, and if I'm not mistaken, 80 is a decent grade. The nice thing about garnet is that it's 'heavy' so when it's disturbed it sinks pretty fast.

How was it to wash the sand? Did it act like nornal sand? Only asking because I found some black sand at a petco and when I went to wash it it kept coming to the top in sheets and leaving a coat of sand on the top of the water and then also came up as black bubbles. It didny behave like any other sand I have used so I did not feel comfortable using it.

Has anyone had problems with the garnet or blasting sand being too sharp?

Nope washed it some floated to the top in bubbles but, fell to the bottom of the tank within a day.

So who is using or has used this black bull garnet stuff? It seems to be the only garnet i can find locally. Any pics on what it looks like in your tank?

Never herd or seen that stuff in a tank,,if you end up getting garnet get #16 or #30,,,,,#50 and #80 feel like powder well if its from sharp jet.

I'm going to hopefully pickup some Black Bull and try it out for a newly setup ray tank happening this weekend. I will update this thread even though its old.
