hey everyone.
I started building a stand a while back and its finished now.
I want to build a glass tank from scratch, but after drawing everything
to scale on google sketchup the stand looks kinda flimsy.

I want to build the tank with 10mm glass,80gal more or less i think.
tank dimensions.
l w h 1200mm * 530mm * 550mm

Here is some pics.
basic frame, the bike had to go somewhere.
the leg beams are 2 * 4s

The finished product looks nice , however i would be nervous about putting 80 gallons/650+ Lbs on top. There is little sheer strength and the horizontal framing would likely flex which is not good for a glass tank.

As built, it will collapse.

Either add a plywood back or two vertical supports evenly spaced in the back. Either will resolve the sheer strength issue.
That will help , but it still doesn't solve the problem of flex at the front/center of the stand. Also without sheeting the ends you have only solved half the sheer issues, unless you attach it to the wall.

Don't need it and don't have to attach it to the walls. Sheathing the ends is not necessary either. The plywood or vertical supports triangulate with the front vertical support. That triangulation and the top form a pillar which will not collapse. Sure, adding vertical supports in the front and sheathing the sides would make it even stronger, but they are not necessary.

The only reason that the stand won't work as it is right now is because wood doesn't have the same sheer strength as metal. Flimsy metal stands with the same design as this stand hold immense weight. With wood, the wood will give way and the fasteners/glue will break loose.

will adding support to the coners front and back maybe work like here on the red
