Will this stand do?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
it is doubtful this would take the weight of a fully filled tank, especially due to the height of the unit. any imbalance in load, or floor surface will cause the full weight to be transfered on the horizontal plane causing sheering force at joints. Best put a back and sides on the unit, although not load baring doors would allow the concealment of external pumps and fish paraphernalia. addition of central strut along the length of the top, surcured to the (3/4 ply possibily) sides will assist in taking the load.

okay.this was for a 80gal.if it was less say a 58gal which i can get from a friend would it stil be to weak?

Beautiful craftsmenship but I fear as well for 80 gallons of water plus substrate and other objects will prove unstable. I wish you luck with whatever direction you go but great work.

It will most likely fold up on itself either forward or backward as it is now. If it was mine, I would make 3 panels out of 3/4" plywood sized to fit between your existing supports. Two for the sides, and one for the back. I would drill pocket holes around the perimeter of the panels. You can even pre-finish them to match the rest of the stand before you install them. Then just slop some glue on the edges, hold them in place, and shoot your pocket screws and you're done.

Do something nice with this but don't put a tank full of water on it. Tank stands seem to go to extremes on this site...most are made strong enough to hold houses up and some like this are floods waiting to happen...I went overkill on my stand but can sleep at night knowing it can take a direct missle strike.

I would agree with Nolapete that all you need to do is add either 2 supports to the back, or just put a piece of plywood sheathing on the back. That will prevent it from twisting.

If the stand was built to the size of the tank, then all the weight should be on the four corner posts, which being 2x4's can handle the weight. You just need to support them laterally so that they don't twist, which would cause the stand to fail.

The short answer is yes. Will that be enough ? Maybe.
Keep in mind , the larger you make those triangles the more sheer strength you add while at the same time reducing the span (both good things).
As an alternative how about adding a 1 x 6 or 2 x 6 all around the underside of the top and attach it to the wall ? This would make your design much more rigid.
Having said that I think Bob965 is on the right track.
Perhaps it would be better to use this stand for another purpose and build a new stronger version.

I thought glass tanks had to be fully supported aroud their perimeter ?
