will this work ? stand build q's with pics

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
so i am wondering if i have built it strong enough ?

My answer would be NO.
At the end of the day you will do what ever you want, but I have to agree with everyone else and suggest you use some 4x2 inside the plywood. I would not be able to sleep at night with my tank sitting on that stand.

it is screwed together with #8 1 1/4" screws every 6 inches in every pannel I used at least 40 screws

1-1/4" screws and you are using 3/4" plywood? That only leaves 1/2" of bite. Not near enough! Sorry to say, but that stand, as is, is catastrophe waiting to happen!!

I think if you were to use longer screws,
say 1 1/2" or 1 3/4" and space them every 3"
and be sure to pre-drill the holes with the correct size counter sink bit,
and put a drop of "Gorilla Glue" in each hole as well as the mating surfaces,
you'll be just fine with the amount of wood you have there...
If anything put another panel across the front of the bottom

417.25 lbs is what 50 gallons of water weighs...

After the glue dries, get a couple or three of your big buddies and have them sit on it, and see what it does....

I'm sure it'll be fine...:headbang2

Looks like a bookstand shelf to me. Bookstand shelves are weak as can be,do what Zenzzo says, he's a genius. About scrubbies at least. :)

So is it just lateral support that is questionable at the moment, if so I will add 2 horizontal shelves and frame the sides and top with a 4 " ply trim, this is not my first wood project. I am not a carpenter but I have built lots of structures including a 40' shop 15 years ago that is still standing today.

In my opinion plywood is extremley strong the layering in oposite directions of the veneers if built properly ,would be just as good as a plywood on frame design. cabinet makers stoped building framed cabinets years ago.

I do think I should have used glue and will take it apart and glue every joint, thanks for the input so far.

I don't see why that won't work. You have support from many angles. My stand is a pos store bought brand and its a design similar except without any backing which is bad but it works just fine.

Plywood is very strong. Many people here make stands for smaller tanks that could take the weight off a 300 gallon aquarium.

If anything put another panel across the front of the bottom

I would shift it to the top and take a jig saw to it, make it look decorative :)

3/4 plywood is quite strong, I would add longer screws between your other screws and test it.
if anything add a small strip at top and bottom of the front side to stop any flexing.
