I have a similar setup. Bare tank so no territorys. They do fight a little. But they don't do damage to each other. I have other cichlids in there too(female midas/and a texas) so I think it helps. Also going to add some other cichlids to this later on.

hwabout if its tiled and only 1 piece of driftwood 6 oscars some convicts tht will spawn so free food for the oscars =]
It is quite commonly understood pairing Cichlids, which Oscars are, do not appreciate tankmates that look similar to themselves...
Despite how much I love Oscars, and how much I wanted an Oscar Community... I was FAR happier with my 300 Gal after I gave up the Oscar Community notion and stocked it with a variety of different species including a pair of Oscars.
The Convicts will not serve as a species that are tougher than the Oscars that encourage them to rely on each other for safety. Fish from the Amphilophus or Parachromis family would.
I would highly suggest you do not bank on people's suggestions that it should or might work... unless those people have tried it. People besides myself have tried it, and in most cases that I've read it has resulted in disaster for the Oscars invovled. I personally know of two cases where it seemed to work out, I listed both of those situations in my first response...

Agree^^ Also I wouldn't want oscars to be eating any live food even fry, as it may increase aggression. As well as I would never purposely put a breeding pair of anything in a already aggressive tank.
I also will say I never outright planned a multiple oscar tank. I bought one and it wouldn't get along with my more valuable fish. And I didn't want to keep it by itself. As well as oscars are retardedly hard to find homes for so getting rid of it wasn't an option. So luckily I found someone who had a couple oscars they wanted to move and the mixed cichlid tank started from there. If I had a choice I wouldn't plan a multiple/majority oscar tank. I would go in a different direction.

What are the dimensions of your 500 Gal?
Do you plan to attempt to create a ‘natural’ type environment that allows fish to establish territories, or do you plan to create the empty box stuffed full of fish look?
I have very little experience with the empty box stuffed full of fish approach and do not find such tanks at all visually pleasing, so I won’t share any speculative thoughts on this approach…
If you take an approach that allows fish to have territories and make themselves “at home” in the tank, Then no I do not believe 6 Oscars will do well at all in your tank.
I’m sure the tank will have ample length (8’+) to allow two males to establish territories out of each others line of sight, which would be fine. If you wish to keep pairs in the tank each male could have a female.
Beyond that I think you have ample space for additional tank mates, as 500 Gal is a huge tank. My suggestions against keeping a large group of Oscars in this tank is not based on the tank not being large enough, it’s based on the principal that Oscars are not schooling fish and we cannot change the nature of a fish.

oh man tht sucks im gunna hav to go throw all my plans againI have kept a pair of O's that went to 10", in with Aros, Plecos, and when the 2 O's would start to joust, the entire tank went Agro...
The only way I'd even keep an O now adays is a single in a comm of Aros and cat's...
They can be really cool fish, like little interactive puppys...but too expensive to keep a 150 for a single pair of O's

ok so i hav a 400 and im addicted to os tht sucks that i cnt keep 8 or 6 so any one can suggest a community tank of mf like jd ect and i plan on goin with a plain tank with some rocks here and there like caves im thinking of mainly cichlids and mayb some others ok is this ok?? but ima need 4 os
