will this work?

Spray bars don't provide even flow but have some overflows on the drip plates so you still get some flow when it clogs before you maintain it.

The bioballs can handle almost any amount of flow. You can substitute plastic shotgun wadding instead. It is self cleaning and cheaper than bioballs in bulk.

wait a sec? spent shells? doesnt sound clean, i just googled what you said, and i dont think spent primers, gunpowder and brass would be a good idea

So, I would rethink your design a bit. With a 5000gph pump, you'll find that a drip tray is going to be problematic at best. I would consider forgetting the bio tower and just going with a simple mechanical filter (filter socks) and bio filtration (ceramic media). This will more than cover the filtration needs of your tank, and allow you to run that awesome pump full out.

You can also save the $500 for 2 fx5s, and the power it takes to run them. With a 100g sump, you won't need them.

right but how much will flow through a filter sock? will i need a dozen so i dont need to change nonstop? ive never used filter socks, and how many lbs of ceramic will it take for a 100g sump? easily a couple hundred pounds right? now im lost. ceramic rings or seachm pond matrix? maybe a bunch of both? i enjoy input, but sometimes it gets me even more lost. what would everyone do with a 100g tank for a filter?

Hi kida, i am desiging my own sump similar to what you need, infact very similar in the stocking levels of fish and sump but i am looking at a 150g (6x2x2) (UK) sump for a 500g tank.
My plan was to have either 4 filter socks, so two 2 inch outlets from tank to 4 socks in the first chamber, over a weir onto a drilled plate (1/2 inch holes) to a large chamber of Flocor, as used in KOI pond filters and similar to sgotgun cartridges, but more area for its length as it is corrugated, then under into a another chamber of K1 (chamber half full, AT MOST) circulated by a power head, this will need a small holed gauze/plate of somesort so the K1 doesnt go all over the sump, then its returned to the tank by a 3500gph external pump and also another incase of failure and more turnover.

I will be dividing the sump into chambers of around

Sock- 10"
flocor- 18"
K1-24"
heater-8"
pump-12"

Just a rough idea, plenty of time to change it.

I have a large sand pressure filter which i am thinking of using which will be a great thing for Bio filtration, not sure if to bother with that yet thiough, i hav ebeen told it would do the job on its own.

If you dont know about K1, i have found its one of the best modern media, you can use it either packed as in staionary or better still circulated around the chamber where then you only need tp fill the chamber no more half the volume so the media can move around, i am using it now but staionary in a 45g sump with the Flocor and its doing fine on a 150g tank.

Shotgun wadding can be used, but you buy it new, not used :) It's not shells, it's the wadding that goes inside... google shotgun wadding, it's clear/white plastic..

If I were you I'd keep your 100g tank and buy a 300gallon rubbermaid livestock tank instead... They're cheap and you'd have your 100g for your fish obession... but that's just me :)

my 100g has to go for a few reasons, mainly the whole 1 in 1 out idea (ya i know its not going far) and also it looks horrible and has hard water stains i cannot get rid of. i really liked the idea of kaldness k1 and the discs, but ive really only seen it in moving bed filters in the tanks. i was actually designing a small one for a 40b i have. is the shotgun wadding like what you use in a muzzel loader? heres my idea, huge overflow boxes one on each corner loaded with pond matrix, into the sump at each end with 2 filter socks on each side, then into the middle with prob 40lbs of ceramic and heaters and out through a reeflo hammerhead gold. hope this works im going into something im not 100% with

I would try to put some sort of mechanical filter media before your pond matrix otherwise it will clog up with poo, fish food, etc and become less effective.

good tip, didnt even think of that, will it do anygood before any mechanical? or will it get totally filled with crap (literally)
