right but how much will flow through a filter sock? will i need a dozen so i dont need to change nonstop? ive never used filter socks, and how many lbs of ceramic will it take for a 100g sump? easily a couple hundred pounds right? now im lost. ceramic rings or seachm pond matrix? maybe a bunch of both? i enjoy input, but sometimes it gets me even more lost. what would everyone do with a 100g tank for a filter?
Hi kida, i am desiging my own sump similar to what you need, infact very similar in the stocking levels of fish and sump but i am looking at a 150g (6x2x2) (UK) sump for a 500g tank.
My plan was to have either 4 filter socks, so two 2 inch outlets from tank to 4 socks in the first chamber, over a weir onto a drilled plate (1/2 inch holes) to a large chamber of Flocor, as used in KOI pond filters and similar to sgotgun cartridges, but more area for its length as it is corrugated, then under into a another chamber of K1 (chamber half full, AT MOST) circulated by a power head, this will need a small holed gauze/plate of somesort so the K1 doesnt go all over the sump, then its returned to the tank by a 3500gph external pump and also another incase of failure and more turnover.
I will be dividing the sump into chambers of around
Sock- 10"
flocor- 18"
K1-24"
heater-8"
pump-12"
Just a rough idea, plenty of time to change it.
I have a large sand pressure filter which i am thinking of using which will be a great thing for Bio filtration, not sure if to bother with that yet thiough, i hav ebeen told it would do the job on its own.
If you dont know about K1, i have found its one of the best modern media, you can use it either packed as in staionary or better still circulated around the chamber where then you only need tp fill the chamber no more half the volume so the media can move around, i am using it now but staionary in a 45g sump with the Flocor and its doing fine on a 150g tank.
