Will two fire mouths be okay with an Oscar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
GrantA94, sorry I will not remove your comments from the thread( I have no idea how). My question is by himself will a nine inch oscar be okay by himself in a 55 gallon?

it's doable, but would you like to live in a closet. There is survive, yes we will survive with excessive filtration and frequent water changes. Will he be happy?, No. If something happens do you risk his life by having smaller than realistic water to dilute ammonia? Yes. A couple aspects why Os go into larger tanks, first the size, how would you like a cell that you can't lay down, and you can stand up in? Second aspect is the actual gallon amount of water that the O can swim in, they need decent water amounts to dilute their dirty life style.

If you want an unhappy fish, keep him in the 55 and water changes, every other day, to every few days, up to 50%.

+1

Pretty much summed up what i was going to say. He will survive yes, and with 200 gallons worth of filtration he should be okay. However, you should upgrade, this will keep the O much happier and it will make your tank maintenance easier too. If you want to keep him with tankmates (this will make him happier IMO) then you will require 100+, if you want to keep him alone then you need 75+. However, the dimensions change with size, making it pointless if you get the same size aquarium only taller. I would advise a 125 then you could keep all your mentioned stock together.

If by okay you mean he will live, Yes.
