I currently have a single Magnum 350 for filtration on my 75 gal setup. I am considering adding a second Magnum 350. My water clarity is pretty decent with only two small (2") tiger oscars and a small pleco that call the tank home, with possibly one or two more oscars in the near future. I really want to get my water crystal clear. I have used the micron filter for water polishing very minimally with only a slight difference in the clarity of the water. Would the two filters be overkill? Any input on different media will also be greatly appreciated.

Would the two filters be overkill?

I run a pair of the 350`s little brother..the HOT 250 on a 55g.
I only use the micron cartridges and my water sparkles.
I see no problem with your using a pair of 350 on your 75g.
Of all the filter systems I have used, the Magnum series has impressed me the most.
After canisters, sumps, HOB, and a few DIY filters these Marineland filters have delivered exactly what they said they would.
BTW: You do plan on a larger tank for all the fish you have, right?

I ran three Magnums on my 300 gallon and it worked like a champ when it came to mechnical filtration.
First of all the more filtration the better, so if you can afford a second magnum 350, I say do it. Plus you can mix and match what you use i.e, bio case in one and carbon/blue pad in the other, or polisher filter and carbon/blue pad, which works well if you have a wet/dry sytems as well. But with the amount of fish you are talking about adding I would surely get a second fliter, besides it will also come in handy with the bigger tank you will eventually need. lol

Thanks for the replies so far! I do plan on upgrading to a larger setup eventually. Right now all my guys are roughly 2". Doviiman, my method of thinking is along the lines of yours, the more filtration the better. Secondly, I do plan to mix the methods of filtration between them. I optimally want to set them up with the carbon/blue pad in one and the micron filter in the other. Kaiser, how long is a micron filter lasting you if thats all you're using? Anybody heard of anyone daisy chaining the filters together? Output of one filter running mechanical filtration to the input of the second filter running micron filtration.

I have a magnum that is going on 10 years of use. I only use it for water changes now, but they will last forever. They are power hogs and have very small internal volume though, and personally I find them to be a pita to clean compared to Renas or Eheims. Two magnums can technically handle a 75 gallon easily but with 4 oscars youre going to need a much larger biofilter and eventually a larger tank.

I run mutiple canisters on several tanks and always have on any tank. I dont believe in having too much filtration. No such thing as overkill as long as it doesnt affect the fishes behavior imo...

If your water isn't crystal clear with a Magnum 350 you need to augment it with a Diatom filter, not another Magnum 350. A diatom filter will make your Magnum 350 a pleasure to clean in comparison... but I have never seen anything beat a diatom for water clarity.

Lets stop using the word overkill when talking about filtration.

Replaced by what?

Just short of 2 weeks before cleaning.
Around day 10 you see a noticable flow reduction.
Bleach/water bath and some HD rinse action gets the cartridge pretty clean.

I keep spare micron filter sitting in a solution 1cap bleach to six cups of water, so while I am using one, when it time to change the filter, I just grab one oout the soilution, rinse it out, switch filter with the dirty one and it's a done deal. Takes all of 15 minutes total to change out filters, and that's with the kids getting all in the way:)

Won a bid on a second 350 on Ebay and recieved the filter today! I had some spare tubing and decided to experiment a little. I "daisy chained" the two together, fed the output of one to the input of the other with one outlet and strainer in the tank for the two filters. I'm loving it. After a thorough cleaning today, my water is crystal clear. Its like my tank has gone HD! Im running the first filter with carbon and a blue fiber pad (will be switching carbon out to ceramic soon) feeding into the second unit with a micron filter.
