I'm in the process of setting up my 180g in the basement and am concerned about temperature swings. Is there such a device out there these days which could log the temperature every hour either from within the tank or attached to the glass? I am not looking at spending much I really just want to measure once just to see how much variance there is in the tank in one 24hr period at this time of year. Eventually I may shell out for an apex, but may have to pray for a bonus to be able to afford one of those...

What is the average air temp in your basement this time of year? Basements tends to stay very consistent and temp fluctuation is very slow. At least in my neck of the woods. A large tank will also retain water temp pretty well also. You shouldn't get much temp fluctuations with the right amount of heaters.

My 180 is in my unheated basement with winter air temps in the low 50degF. I have 3 heaters, total 800W, running off a controller. My tank only fluctuate about 1degF. I also use rigid foam insulation to help with electrical cost. Don't know how effective it actually is, but I feel it can only help.

I've never heard of an aquarium thermometer that logs temps by the hour.

Apex controller logs temps, but yeah at over $200..

I don't know how far down it goes overnight, I typically see swings from 60-62 to 68 evenings when I am home (ambient room temp). I just want some confirmation whether the hydor 300w can manage the job.

That's a lot of money just to keep a log of temp.

With that much of a dip, 300w probably won't cut it. It'll most likely be working over-time to keep up. I would double the wattage be adding another heater, and I highly don't recommend getting just 1 600w heater. Multiple heaters is a good practice in case one heater fails.

You can just hang a thermometer on a string and go down and check it ever hour haha

Sent from my iPhone using MonsterAquariaNetwork app

That's exactly what I would do instead of shelling out $200. Just pick up a digital thermometer off Ebay for like $5 instead of attaching a string to a conventional in-tank thermometer lol

heh well I considered that just pull an all nighter seeing as its just a one time deal. I do have a spare 150w I could use to supplement the 300w mebbe I'll see how things work out. If I check first thing in the morning that maybe as cold as it gets.

You can get a Reef Lite temp controller for $100. It come with a software that will allow you to monitor temps thru your laptop.

Actually the 300w hydor is working great, Im surprised it is managing as well as it is. I put a 150w in to get the tank up to temp and then unplugged it and the temp is hardly budging.

I just use a Mavarick ET-73 wireless BBQ/Smoker thermometer. I got it for about $35 a few years back and it's still working. It doesn't log data, but it will tell me the temp when I'm a few rooms away. It has an alarm too. There are better, more user friendly, wireless thermometers these days though.
