i used to have a plague of the hard shelled snails, i think trumpets. any ways, the whole colony used to clean the tank at night, however, i don't know what happened to them all.

i am just experiencing the usual algae that grows on the side of the tank if it isn't scrubbed. the sun hits on one side of the tank.

Well if the sun is hitting the tank, and you have enough nitrates, that'll be your problem. If you can reduce sunlight (and total light) it will help your cause a lot.
