Yes, that combo is generally not recommended..

However, it's working in my tank for over a year as the Aro has always been significantly larger than the Gars. And the Gars have always been large enough to not be bothered by the Aro. (And my particular Aro is docile to begin with.. At 12" he even had 4" Pearl Gourami as tank-mates who he was very cool with..)

So, it's all good..
