WLim bead filter users thread

Great to hear recumbent. I'm a big fan of panaques and have four steadily growing L190 in this tank, and already at ~8" each they make a ton of sawdust, so if you have any panaque-specific advice or comments I'd love to hear it. Looking forward to seeing your thread too.

I have 10 big cichlas and 10 big red parrots filtered by a single 16" glass filter. Been running it for over 2 years on this 260g tank with a 1/15hp pump. No air blower but I do have a hole in the suction line to push air into the chamber during backwash. 19" or bigger filters will require a bigger pump because it has more media to push through.
A plus for this filter is the ease of cleaning and water change but it does have similar issue of a typical canister filter. Mainly, the reduction of flow between cleaning.

The one concern I have with this filter is how frequently it will need backwashing with the large amount of "sawdust" my Panaques make. Here's a couple of pics showing what the settling chamber before my mechanical filtration catches;

That was only about 2/3 of it as the bucket I was siphoning into overflowed when the wool clogged up and a fair bit of the waste ended up on the lawn. I know the filters are easy to backwash, just not sure if I want to be doing it that frequently! I'm wondering about running the wlim filter off a settling chamber (so the water would go over the current overflow set up and into something like a 4x2x2' that would allow most of the heavy waste to settle), that would give me ~100g to backwash the filter with, if needed, and would catch a lot of the physical waste before it gets to the filter.

Holy sawdust! With that load, the filter will clog fast for sure. I wouldn't recommend the glass filter for this unless you prefilter which would defeat the whole purpose of speed and ease.
