prime takes care of chloramine it also makes ammonia non-toxic.. too late now but, would've been a good idea to dose prime everyday till you could figure out the problem

I only trust Amquel+plus for this reason.

When I feel there is something causing ammonia like food trapped somewhere I give the tank a little dose of it to help take care of the problem till I can get it back in order. Also like mentioned earlier, city water is very inconsistent at times and this is another time I turn to amquel, having a good sized carbon water filter also helps.

Another thing I have found is that if there is anything or anywhere in your sump that could hold stagnant water it would become a killing bomb in the sump. (i.e. cup) that doesn't exactly have constant flow through it then it would be nasty if tipped over.

Even if the cup is fully submerged it will allow any detritus or crap to decay in the cup and form a little bomb. I learned this the hard way. I had a small bucket sitting in my sump to hold up a media tray and although the water dripped through or around it it still allowed for stagnant water to form but I have my air blower come on only during water changes and when it came on it forced the water in the bucket out and instantly killed the fish in the sump.
