i recently got a asian red tail catfish... yes i know they get huge!... i have him in a grow out tank alone right now well last week i couldnt find him so i checked the floor...then i took out the castle type thing in the middle of the tank... and he was lodged up in it... the whole loooked way to small for him to get into... so i have no clue how he did!.. i took that out of the tank because im scared he'll get cought.. im adding hiding spots soon...

well this morning i woke up and he was gone again... and theres only two rocks in the tank.. where he couldve been hiding under.. so i checked and he wasnt... looked on the floor around the tank.. wasnt there... i opened the top to my filter and i saw two whiskers... so i thought GREAT! he got sucked in or something... i picked up the carbon ?????? bag if thats what it is.. and he started to move and splash and jumped into the tank... i jumped so high it scared the h*ll out of me! .. sorry for the long story but anyone know how he couldve go in!?...the water comes out where he mustve gonnen in .. which is above water level and the water is flowing down and he wouldve had to gone against the current...then he made his was under the bag of carbon....:screwy:

that's why i don't like red tail :grinno: my red tail is a trouble maker so i give it on my cousin:naughty: but still its kind cute to me and funny:ROFL:

If your filter is dirty and covered including the water flow (usualy gets long green algea) he was just going for a meal. I use to have crabs that constantly would work their way into the filter to feed off of it.

Get some more hiding spots in there for him to feel more comfertable.

Good luck with him, wish I had the room to keep one.

My pleco used to swim up the stream of my AC500. It took me months to figure out what the big splash noise was every night - when he was done, he'd drop back into the tank. By the time I got a light to the tank to see what the noise was, there was never anything out of place... :screwy:

Part of the pleasure of our hobby. Sharing stories of silly things our fish do. Who needs children?

In the meantime, if you can handle the esthetics, a piece of drain pipe goes a long way for calming down big cats.

I used to have a tire track eel that wound up in my filter more that enough times  so I got a canister to prevent the problem.;) He had some hiding spots but loved to be in the filter. :screwy: I haven't ever heard of any cat's doin this though:ROFL:  Sometimes when I go fishin at a damn by my house I'll see carp always tryin to get back up in the tubes.:grinno: Wow the strength they have to go against fast shallow currents is amazing. Definitely get some cover in there to keep him occupied and feeling safe, he'll probably leave your filter alone.:)

Weather/DoJo loaches are the worst at this kind of thing! Believe me, name it and one of the two was there. All to just hide. Burry themselves right into the sand, under rocks, through tiny crevices in the wood. And they were always jumping and hitting the hood.

I purchased the two largest Kuhli Loches available at my local fish shop hoping they would do well in my tank. As soon as I drop them in the tank my cichlid comes up to them, looks at them (for what felt like a minute), and all of a sudden begins eating one. All I can see is about half an inch of my four-five inch loach sticking out of his mouth! When this is happens, the other one races towards the other end of my tank and I I go after it, I am finally able to net it and it is placed it my other tank :) Lucky bastard! This happened right before Thanksgiving 2006!

About a month ago March 2007 I am gravel cleaning my tank and all of a sudden I notice something shoot out, it was my KUHLI LOACH!!! I guess the cichlid had not taken him down completely and the loach was regurgatated by the cichlid! Now that is skillfull hiding. I did not see him for 3-4 months. I did not go after him as I thought to myself he made it this far, hopefully I surprise myself again!

BTW- I wish my two baby bichirs were hiding under the gravel, but I know that is not the case! :irked: Dam cichlid! I'm tired of this cichlid but he has been with me for about five years so he not going anywhere!:grinno:
