Edit 15 May 2013:

Ok guys, I've had a lot of people ask me who is going to author this article. After some consideration, I've decided that it can be any of you who wish to do it.

Here's how it will work. At the bottom of this post, I'm going to post a template. Simply take this template, code and all (it would be best to quote this post and then remove everything that I've typed and the [qu-ote] tags. Then, just fill in the stuff for the species profile.

Here's the template:

Genus species
Author/Co-Authors- lix.ma14, Payarakeeper(you won't add this, I will add this when the actual guide is posted!)

Editor- Chicxulub (you won't add this, I will add this when the actual guide is posted!)

General Info
An interesting, encyclopedic blurb about the species, to include their availability in the hobby, temperament and interesting facts

Distribution
Example: South America: Magdalena River basin and Santiago River basin in Ecuador.

Diagnostic Traits for Hobbyists
-Use hyphens
-As bullets
-To make your points
-This should describe
-What a hobbyist
-Should look for to
-Get an easy ID of the fish

Academic Diagnostic Traits
Use the Key to Species found in academic papers

Size
Mention the normal size of an adult fish, the normal size of an aquarium kept fish and the world record size if available.

Well, at the demand of the community, here we go!

Its now time to tackle this subject and get some definitive answers out into the hobby. As it stands, it appears that there are sixteen species plus two unnamed variants in Erythrinidae for a total of eighteen (!) types of fish that we have to profile. This is significantly more than is found in ATF or Dorados and I would greatly appreciate some help ferreting out data to examine on this one.

For this thread, I have no intention of half assing it. We need to get at least all sixteen species profiled and documented or its not worth doing. I'm well aware that many of the species aren't in the hobby but thats fine. They will still be covered in the literature and should at least have some diagnostic drawings from the author of the papers that described them and/or photographs of the holotypes/paratypes.

What I need from you:

  • Scientific papers related to wolf fish
  • Pictures, pictures, pictures!

Jelly, I intend to use your site as a credited reference for material that will go into this sticky. Do you have an objection to that?

Ok guys, lets get this done!

I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm really excited this is happening.

What do you mean by author of a general care section??

Does the wolf fish ID have to be the same format as the dorado and ATF one?

What about a care sheet?

Hi Rob. I am working on this thread right now.

Outstanding. I'm gonna shoot you a PM about this. Your involvement is a huge weight of of my back on this project.

The care sheet is what I call the general care section that you asked about above. I do want this thread to be in the same format as the ATF and dorado threads for the sake of easy reading. I was going to reformat the payaras last night while I was sitting at work with nothing to do, but I actually had something to do for once so it didn't happen lol.

Soon enough the meat and potatoes of the Payara thread will be the same as the ATF and Dorado threads, to include the commandeering of several posts after the OP for multiple pages. I'm going to keep the content essentially the same, just change the format for easier reading.

How can i help? i'm really bored right now! lol

I couldnt find too many big red wolfs but my buddys was the biggest ive ever seen. its the erythrinus sp peru. heres all the pics i have of it before it died. It was 12" when it finally passed away. the pics rnt the best but it just shows the size they can reach and how thick they get. dont know if it helps u out or not though.
