wolf fish are nice and all but other then when they eat, theres nothing more to it. Most only eat at night so your not even going to see it much

Mine can be "fairly" active for a mala. Most evenings he's swimming around. I feed him before I go to bed so I always get to watch him eat. He could probably stand a tank upgrade though, his tank has a 48" x 18" footprint but he still seems cramped.

My wolf was really active and was also one of the loco killers. He would hit the glass sometimes if people walked by it from time to time. I don't think i could keep anything in with him. they don't need a lot of space. Mine would eat anything. Fish, mice, even my neighbors cat :) haha...
anyway like stated before it seems to vary per fish. Maybe you would get a nice one. Also like said before make sure anything you put in with him you don't mind losing. I think they are awesome. really miss my big guy (heater went nuts) which brings up another point... Don't get a little cheapy heater for him, he might break it.

To sum it up.........GO FOR IT!!!! I think you will love it

i've had my wolf fish for about a year and it grew up with s.a. cichlids with no problems at all....he mainly minds his own buisness.....he doesnt bother the other tank mates and nobody bothers him....and i can truly say i've only seen it eat about three times.....mine just eats at night.

I used to have a mala that was fairly active in the evenings and night, which went against most of what I have heard about em. It did lay around without moving much most of the day, I got it to take Massivore pellets, I'd drop em in one at a time and if it saw em fall it would pick em off. This one was very mean, at about 8 inches it went after a 15inch gar. I had to give up the tank I was keeping it in, but it was one of my favorite fish. If you are willing to keep a tank with possibly just one predatory fish that may or may not be an active swimmer,I would recomend it.

Get a red and a common.. best of both worlds. I've got mine in an over / under tank setup, the red wolf is up top since he is the most active.

I don't have much more to add then what's already been said..............I luv my wolf fish awesome lookin' fish. I have both Hoplias Malabaricuus and Erythrinus Peru. Both live (so far) togather in a 75 w/ a pair of Salvinis. Both eat a few massivore pellets and feeder goldfish daily. The Hoplias is actually the more visable of the 2, the Peru comes out for air then heads back to his cave. It's a high risk tank - the sal's are just as capable of killin' the wolves as the wolves the sal's. However I started the tank with all 4 as small juvies and so far everybody minds thier own business. The Sal's even breed - fry didn't last long. The sal's are @ 4" the wolves are 8".

Mala's are pretty docile at that size. I'd worry about him turning on the others once he gets larger.

Mine is about 11.5 - 12" now he gets ticked off if anything (including me) comes near the tank.
