Wolf Fish with SA/CA Cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For starters the video is not a Red Wolf it's a Hopla. Mala. or Common Wolf a much larger and way more aggressive species of Wolf fish.

Red Wolves don't get as large as their cousins around 8" in length and not so robust.
So long as theres a place the wolf can call home the wolf might survive. The problem I see is 2 super aggressive cichlids stressing the wolf into hiding to the point of starvation. However fish personality plays into compatability more so when it comes to large aggressive fish. I'm sure someone out there made this work and 250 gal. gives you more than the intial room required. If it were me I'd choose smaller or less aggressive cichlids to cohab with a red wolf - In time the Dovii will more than likely want all 250 gal. to himself.

why would you even post that video and support those idiots, that is straight up animal cruelty

I think my point was quite clear...put them together and you will have one dead fish
yeah i mean i agree that they will probably stress the wolf fish to death but that vid isnt even a fair depiction of that, you put any fish of that size into a frikin 10g tank and you will have dead fish

Thank you everyone I think i have changed my mind completely it was more of an impulse buy. Im going to keep my dovii in my smaller 150 gallon. Im not sure what im going to put in my larger which is actually a 265 im really leaning towards a florida gar, to live with my silver aro, Rd and pacu. thanks

just build him a nice big cave, given his stream lined body just make the entrance only big nuf for wolfi but not them.

That wolf fish in the video is not a red wolf and will grow to about two feet and kill everything!!!!!!!
Right now it's just a baby and that is why the Red Devil has the
upper hand.
Just like an Umbie that grows to two feet but is only mean when bigger.
On the other hand a Red Wolf grows to 8 inches or so and if given
a big enough tank with proper hiding spots, then it might work out.
But if you don't have a 250 gal or bigger then I would not risk it.

That dumb video is a bunch of little boys doing even dumber things with a little tank. If you place aggressive fish in a 10 gal. tank you will have problems. You may have better success with your much larger tanks. But RDs are aggressive fish. You will need to be watchful. I think with enough hiding places and visual barriers you can try it. Your biggest concern should be the Dovii. When it grows up it will most likely take over your tank...violently! Remember, don't put much stock in those immature youtube videos that are made without any regards for the fish. Many people have great success with mixed tanks. It's trial and error.
